Name: Athanasios D. Styliadis

Academic Position: Associate professor in the Alexander Institute of Technology, Greece & Visiting research scholar in the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Teaching & Lecturing: Computer Graphics, CAD, GIS, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Programming.

Research: Lots of things, but just a few that generate extensive research funds (economic rationalism dictates that unless there is a financial return the research is not worthwhile...). Nevertheless, I work in heritage monument recording and documentation, computer modeling, virtual reality, digital imaging, photogrammetry, multi-media development, archaeological sites & rock art recording, GIS for CRM, Thai and Lao architecture, site and monument visualisation. This period I am working for the implementation of a multimedia GIS data application for the Greek orthodox churches in Melbourne, Australia.

Other Information: I have also published a bit, sat on lots of committees, ran a few small and large conferences, been on the executive of a few professional organisations and government bodies, been in the news and on the telly, made a few CD-ROMS, wrote three books: (a) Computer Graphics - Algorithms & Programming, (b) Programming the User Interface - A Computing GIS Perspective, (c) GIS - Spatial Reasoning & Geomatics Engineering, taught a lot of subjects, worked in information technology, as well as, the geomatics industry, met a few government leaders and ambassadors, played the game and had a fairly good life so far. Yes, I do have a full CV somewhere but do not see the point in flattering myself to the extent that others need to on the Web. Oh!, and one day I'll wintering to Antarctic or Arctic - I have not decided yet!

Membership: IEEE society for computer graphics, ACM SIGGRAPH, EUROGRAPHICS, eCAADe, ICOMOS, CIPA, AURISA, and a member of the Lalor Florina soccer club in Melbourne.

Life?: A non-emotional trading procedure. So, spot opportunities quickly & notice trends early!!

I like: women, yachting, australian football and (overseas) soccer.

Awards & Honors: "The southern cross challenge" - a EU/Australia funding initiative (1996).

Quotation 1: "We live on an island of knowledge surrounded by a sea of ignorance. As our island grows, so does the shore of ignorance!!" (John Wheeler, 1903)

Quotation 2: "The stock-prices are getting up when the stupids are more than the shares, and getting down when the shares are more than the stupids" (Styliadis, 2003)

More about me

Lecturing on computer graphics & GIS systems in the department of information technology, at the Alexander University of applied sciences (institute of technology), Thessaloniki, Greece.

Graduated of the Aristotle University, Greece, in 1980 with a diploma of surveying, initially worked in the Hellenic Army Geographical Service (Athens) for three years as a geomatics systems programmer. Then, I received a master of science degree in computer science at the University of Dundee, Scotland, in 1989 and joined the academic staff of the information technology department of the Alexander Institute of Technology, Thessaloniki, the same year.

Working and researching in developing and applying spatial information systems in CAD environments and lecturing in computer graphics programming and GIS in Greece (AIT, AUT), Australia (CGISM), USA (NCGIA), Czech Rep. (WSCG, CTU) and Finland (VaasaP, HameP, TUE). For my research I was awarded a doctor of philosophy in engineering from the Aristotle University, Greece, in 1997. I have participated in many research projects on computer modeling, digital documentation of monuments & archaeological sites, CAD/GIS integration, etc.

Finaly, I have published over 60 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, and I am a referee for international journals (Australian CAD, Informatica, Facta Universitatis, ACM Computing Reviews, Acta Universitatis Apulensis) and co-chairman in a number of international conferences (SAS '97 & '99, EUROGRAPHICS 2001, ICTAMI 2003, GeoCAD, etc.).
