Education

Main Education

  • 2004 - 2010
Department of Applied Informatics, University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece
    PhD in Applied Informatics
    • PhD thesis subject: "Semantically enhanced web browsing interfaces"
    • My PhD research project followed an interdisciplinary approach in the area of Human-Computer Interaction and especially in the field of web accessibility combined with Semantic Web technologies. My research proposed a novel assistive web browsing interface using Semantic Web
technologies. During the research I developed a framework of tools based on Sematic Web technologies to assist blind users in their web browsing. The main result of the research was the introduction of the Browsing Shortcuts (BS) idea to improve blind users' navigation in the web. BS is an assistive web browsing interface that communicates to blind users visual meta-information of a web page.
During my PhD research I developed and investigated the impact of 3 versions of BS by conducting a series of user-centered experiments. In overall users' performance measures such as task time, effort needed, web pages visited, time spent per web page were improved by almost 30% when using the BSs compared to the traditional simple sequential reading of a web page. In addition, the visualization of blind users' information seeking tasks in graphs identified specific opportunistic strategies followed by blind users in their web browsing and showed their shift to more rationalized ones when using the BS.
During the last year of my PhD research I joined the army to fulfill my military service (08/2009 – 05/2010). Due to that, my research efforts were reduced during 2009 and 2010.
