Abstract Smart Garbage

Smart Garbage is a project which integrates dynamic vehicle routing, multi-agent systems and sensor received information in a web-based application. This project provides a solution to collect waste in an efficient and environmental friendly manner. Citizens are made aware of their own garbage production by gamification of the process.

Smart Garbage aims to record and distribute data obtained by enhanced sensor techniques on a micro level. Initially, fill-rate levels and CO2 emission rates will be measured. Visualization and distribution of this data is essential to understand the quality of urban life on the long term. Data from the WebWorldWind platform and the Earth Observation Data Service will be used to visualize the effect of garbage collecting systems around the globe. This allows Smart Garbage to influence the users’ behavior by making them aware of more ecofriendly behavior. Ultimately, we strive towards an ecological solution that will reduce CO2 emission and other pollution to the air we breathe.

Status: under development of i) cheap and robust hardware component, ii) gamification model, iii) integration of databases, iv) web-application and v) APIs. Also connections with already existing companies and data providers are being sought.

Currently, the code for the hardware component is published online only. Code for the dynamic route scheduling algorithm (stochastic route optimization), multi-agent system and mobile application are still under development.
